Hunter boots had a great reputation in the British market with the boots being popular under mostly upper class country folks. People who bought Hunter boots were willing to pay the relatively high price for a pair of rubber rain boots as these boots were of extraordinary quality with many reporting to use them for well over 20 years. The public perception of the brand was great, and Queen Elizabeth II awarded the company a Royal Warrant in 1986. Below Princess Di wearing a pair of green Hunter boots in her pre-engagement pictures. This all started to change in 2006 when the Hunter company ran into cash flow problems and was placed into administration a legal status protecting the company against its debtors to buy some time in the hope it can figure out its financial problems before having to go bankrupt. Its accountants indicated the company was suffering from high manufacturing costs, including fuel costs, and a loss from the expansion into the USA. A buy-out by a private consortium followed and the production of the rubber rain boots was moved to low-wage countries. Since 2008 most Hunter rain boots are produced in Asia, predominantly in China. On the website of Hunter this is never really exposed, but your new pair of Hunter boots will likely have a sticker with “Made in China” on the sole of the boot. By itself this is not really a problem, and Hunter itself states in one spot on their website that the production process hasn’t changed significantly in over half a century, while on another place they say the boots are made using many of the original techniques. The keyword here is “many”, by which they try to suggest nothing has really changed. But this is not true, as one key part of the production process did change and this change has led to a lower quality of boot since 2008. When the boots were produced in Scotland the process started with a seamless cotton or nylon “sock” that was dipped in liquid rubber. This formed the basis for the boot to which the other parts were glued on and later vulcanized to make it durable. Even when the glue would let lose or cracks would appear in the glued on parts, the inner rubberized sock that forms the basis of the boot would stay intact and no leaking would take place. Boots produced in China lack this part of the production process and the boots will start leaking as soon as cracks in the outer rubber layers appear. Picture below of a cracked boot, from “wellies and plimsolls” on flickr. Since the production equipment formerly used in Scotland has been sold to another rubber boot company and moved to Serbia, and the staff producing the boots in Scotland has been laid off, it is more accurate to say that the production has not moved to China but a new production process has been started up there. More and more complaints can be found online of people having bought a pair of Hunter boots and running into trouble only months after their purchase when the boots started leaking or peeling as shown above picture from khx89 on twitter. Hunter has from time to time admitted some series of boots have had production mistakes in them, but in general they hold on to their company line that the increase in complaints is mostly due to their increase in sales. The more boots you sell, the more complaints you can receive. The worst part is that Hunter did not seem to react seriously to the complaints coming in. Their customer service department was hard to reach, which they claimed was due to technical issues on their website. Many customers indicated Hunter has tried to avoid responsibility for leaking and peeling boots and offered customers a 20% discount on their next purchase. In my view the Hunter rubber rain boots are iconic rain boots, but their handling of quality issues worries me. When you realize the boots are made by low-wage earners in Asian countries you start to wonder why the prices of relatively simple rubber boots are so high. While I do have a pair of black gloss Hunter boots, I doubt I will be shopping for a second pair anytime soon. Maybe it is time to look further to other brands and see what they have to offer. Below a picture from flickr of some of the older Hunter boots with much better quality. Notice the “made in Scotland” on the label which was later removed as the boots were not made in Scotland anymore. If there is any other brand of rubber boots you would recommend or want to know more about, leave a comment and I will do my best to give them a good look. Highly recommend related articles

Before they became all the rage among fashionistas, rubber boots or wellies were traditionally worn by fishermen, farmers, soldiers, and other occupations frequently exposed to muddy terrain and wet weather. The Hunter Original Tall Wellington Boots are a classic and iconic footwear option, available at a price range of $150 to $175 However, the iconic moment at the 2005 Glastonbury Music Festival when supermodel Kate Moss donned a pair of Hunter rain boots triggered what became known as the “Kate Moss effect.” Kate Moss’s influential choice gave rise to an unprecedented surge in the popularity of Hunter boots and wellies, elevating them from practical footwear to a coveted fashion statement. Here are five things to check before buying 1. Check the Logo Label The first thing to check is the label. Original Hunter boots display the Hunter logo on the front of the boots. The logo should have bold, black block letters on a white rectangular label with red borders. Please verify the Hunter logo label for authenticity and accuracy The print should look clear and readable, with no blurry lines and faded colors. Also, the silver-buckled straps should have a Hunter logo etching. 2. Insoles/Outsoles Genuine Hunter boots are made of high-quality vulcanized natural rubber. The outsoles are decorated with a zigzag pattern and deep treads for better traction on wet surfaces. Hunter boots are meticulously crafted using the finest vulcanized natural rubber, ensuring exceptional durability and superior quality The insoles are multilayered and cushioned, with a distinctive orthopedic design for optimal comfort. So, please take a few minutes to try on a pair before buying it. Try to get a feel of how comfortable the boots are on your feet, and check if they match the description. 3. Weight and Texture One of the best ways to tell a fake from a genuine is by feeling the product in your hands. Because they’re made of vulcanized rubber, Hunter boots can feel pretty heavy. An original pair of Hunter boots will weigh about 4 pounds, while imitations weigh a lot less because they’re made of cheap rubber. Cheap rubber can also feel rough, while high-grade natural rubber is much smoother. 4. Colors and Styles Hunter’s original tall boots usually have ten classic colors, but there are seasonal styles that add more colorways to the mix. Visit the brand’s website to check and compare the styles to ensure you’re getting the real deal. The color or gloss should look even without any breaks on all sides. Hunter’s seasonal boots have expanded their color range, offering a diverse selection of vibrant and stylish options to choose from Counterfeiters often try to imitate the most popular colors but aren’t able to copy the exact shade. Note that imitations are usually two or three shades brighter or lighter than the original ones. 5. Trusted Online Stores When buying Hunter boots online, purchasing from trusted online retailers is always recommended. While other smaller sites may offer a lower price, established retailers guarantee that their products are genuine. A couple more reminders White powdery marks occasionally appear on used Hunter rubber footwear. This happens when insoluble particles begin to rise on the surface. While this may surprise you, it is actually a mark of high-quality natural rubber, and you should, therefore, not be worried. With Hunter’s boot buffer and boot shine, a pristine finish can easily be restored. Genuine Hunter boots can be pretty pricey. The original tall boots are around $175, and the other special styles shearling-lined boots can be up to $270. The fake ones, on the other hand, can be extremely cheap. Hunter boots are quite large especially the tall styles. If you will not be wearing them with thick socks, it is advisable to order one size smaller for a proper fit. Questions Regarding Hunter Are authentic Hunter boots made in China? Established as North British Rubber Company in 1856, the company is still headquartered in Edinburgh, Scotland. The company was founded by American entrepreneurs Spencer Thomas Parmelee and Henry Lee Norris. They arrived in Scotland with a patent from self-taught American chemist Charles Goodyear to make rubberized outer shoes and boots. After going bankrupt in 2006 due to high manufacturing and fuel costs, two years later, the restructured company closed down its factory in Dumfries, a market town and former royal burgh within the Dumfries and Galloway council area of Scotland. A statement from the company said “Hunter is extremely proud of its Scottish heritage and the brand will continue to be designed in Scotland where it is proposed that the new head office will house a specialist product development team. “While this move heralds an exciting time for the brand, the long-term strategy means manufacturing is unlikely to continue in Scotland. Hunter boots, also known as Hunter Wellington boots or simply “Wellies,” are a type of rubber rain boots that have gained popularity for their durability, functionality, and iconic design Credit Melissamn / Shutterstock “Hunter management has looked at every possible option to maintain a production facility in Scotland, however, it is not economically viable to continue with the existing manufacturing function in Dumfries. “Staff in Dumfries are to be offered the opportunity to relocate with the business to Edinburgh, some in alternative roles, and the management hope that as many as possible will be able to fill the jobs created there. “Dumfries has been at the heart of the brand for many, many years and the many people who have worked across all aspects of the business during Hunter’s long association with the town have been extremely valued. “It is with great sadness that this decision has been made but, under this new proposal, the brand’s Scottish heritage will continue to be honored and celebrated as Hunter prepares to enter a new phase returning to its original home in Following the closure of its plant in Scotland, the company outsourced production to Asia in 2008. Its famous rain boots are now made by suppliers in China, India, Indonesia, Italy, Thailand, Turkey, the UK, and Vietnam. Can I wear Hunter boots in the snow? Take a good look at the sole The real deal should have the Hunter name and logo etched onto it, and it should feel sturdy and well-made. Check the stitching Authentic Hunter boots have tight, even stitching without any loose threads. If it looks uneven or messy, it might be a fake. Look at the hardware Real Hunter boots have high-quality buckles and zippers that are strong and durable. Fakes might have flimsy hardware that breaks easily. Consider the price Genuine Hunter boots are usually more expensive than the fakes, so if the price seems too good to be true, it probably is. Check the packaging Real Hunter boots come in a nice, sturdy box with the Hunter logo and product info. If it looks cheap or poorly made, it might not be authentic. Look for the label Genuine Hunter boots have a label on the inside of the boot with the product information and logo. If it’s missing or looks low-quality, it might be a fake. Examine the material Real Hunter boots are made with high-quality, waterproof materials like leather or rubber. Fakes might use cheap or inferior materials. Check the fit Authentic Hunter boots should fit well around your foot and calf, without any gaps or looseness. If they don’t fit quite right, they might not be real. Research the seller Make sure you’re buying from a reputable seller or retailer, and be careful of buying Hunter boots from unauthorized websites. Inspect The Logo Label Inspect The Logo Label The label is the very first and obvious thing to look at. Accordingly, the Hunter logo appears on the front of authentic Hunter boots. In particular, the logo must be composed of large, black block letters on a modern white rectangular badge with red border lines. There should be no blotchy lines or smudged colors in the print, and it must also be clear and easy to read. Besides, the silver-buckled straps must include a Hunter logo etched into them. Check the Insoles and Outsoles Check the Insoles and Outsoles Authentic Hunter boots are typically made of vulcanized natural rubber of the highest quality. In addition, the outsoles feature a zigzag pattern and profound treads for improved grip on wet or low-traction surfaces. For maximum comfort, the insoles are specially cushioned and multilayered, with a unique orthopedic design. So, before you buy a pair of Hunter boots, take some time to try them on. Also, check to see if the boots are comfy on your feet or not and if they match the official description. Examine The Texture and Weight Feeling the Hunter boots in your hands is always one of the greatest ways to tell a forgery from authenticity. In fact, genuine Hunter boots can be quite heavy due to their vulcanized rubber construction. A genuine pair of Hunter boots typically weighs around 4 pounds, whereas knock offs will weigh much less due to the use of cheaper rubber. Stingy rubber might also feel stiff and rough, whereas high-quality natural rubber is far smoother. Check the Style and Colors Check the Style and Colors Hunter’s authentic tall boots are typically available in ten classic colors. However, there are also seasonal styles that include additional colorways. You can visit the Hunter’s official website to check and compare the designs to ensure that you are getting a genuine one. Remember that the color and finish must be consistent no breaks across all over the sides. Counterfeiters frequently attempt to replicate the most common colors but are unable to replicate the perfect color. Keep in mind that knockoffs are typically two or three hues lighter or brighter than the originals. Look for Online Stores You Can Trust When purchasing Hunter boots available on the internet, it is always best to go with a reputable retailer. While other small and new websites might offer a lower price, authorized retailers ensure that the Hunter boots they sell are legitimate. Here are a few more affirmations On the used Hunter rubber boots, there are sometimes white powdery marks. When irresolvable particles start to come to the surface, this will occur. While it might amaze you, it is a sign of first-rate natural rubber, and you should never be concerned. A super clean finish can also be easily repaired by using Hunter’s boot shine buffer. Legitimate Hunter boots can be quite costly. The authentic Hunter tall boots cost around $110, and other unique styles such as shearling-lined Hunter boots can cost up to $250. Counterfeit Hunter boots, on the flip side, can be incredibly cheap. The size of Hunter boots is also relatively large typically the tall styles. So, if you will not be wearing your Hunter boots with thick socks, just remember to get one size smaller to ensure a suitable fit. Pro Tip Always purchase your Hunter boots from a trustworthy seller. Hunter Boot USA, for instance, is the official supplier for the United States, and they have a website where you can buy the boots. Also, look for an assurance of genuineness. Such guarantees are provided by legitimate sites; relatively poorly-known vendors might not. Warning Be really cautious of “too good to be true” deals. This can be a huge sign of fake Hunter boots.
